Laidback Gourmet: Ruffles’ Flame Grilled Steak Chips

Welcome back to the Laidback Gourmet and I have to be honest with you, my loyal readers. There are some reviews I look forward to more than others. Sometimes I legitimately cannot wait to taste what I chose to write about for the article. This week is one of those weeks. Big D told me he wanted me to review a steak he was gonna send me, and I loves me some steak. Seriously though, who doesn’t? Well, vegetarians I suppose but that’s neither here nor there. Well I’m hyped for this one, I even have my little table all decked out:

Does the fork go on the left or the right?

I’m as ready as I can get. You got my steak ready D?

Big D: “There you go Ed, bon appetit”

Wait, what was that about a hot plate?

You Raised My Hopes and Dashed Them Quite Expertly, Bravo Sir!

…seriously D?

Well, yea, apparently these are a thing that exists in this world. Potato chips that tastes like flame grilled steak. Was there really that big an outcry for meat flavored chips? Did we learn nothing from Doritos X13 chips or whatever they were called? Sighs, well, lets open them up and see what they look like.

Its like looking into Peter Luger’s kitchen

Hm, not too much a smell coming from them other than the normal smell of a potato chip… and perhaps a hint of something else. Something I can’t quite put my finger on. Seriously I took a few minutes to try and decide how to describe what that slight smell is and I can’t. I even asked other people to smell my bag and they just stared at me. I assume they couldn’t identify the smell either.

Apparently it’s true. Ruffles do indeed have ridges!

The chips have a slightly darker coloration and are speckled with… …stuff. I’ll assume they grilled a steak, dehydrated it, and ground it up into a powder to dust onto this chip. I’m like 98% sure that’s what they did. I guess I can’t put this off any longer, let’s try it.

Om nom nom

Hm! Ok, I’m kind of surprised. These don’t suck! I will fully admit I thought these were gonna be a trainwreck, but no, these aren’t that bad at all. I wouldn’t describe them as steak per say though. I don’t taste anything “meaty” with these. They do however have a distinct flavor of Char-Broiledness. You know, if Char-Broiledness was an actual word. Do know what I mean though? You know that distinct char flavor a steak gets from being on the grill? Thats what these chips taste like, sans the actual steak flavor. I wouldn’t say these are great and I cant see myself buying these again but they’re way better than they have any right to be! As for their wackiness… they’re Steak flavored chips that actually taste char broiled. That’s fairly high on the wacky scale. Final Score:

And so another Laidback Gourmet comes to a close. As always, thank you for reading, and if you have any comments, suggestions or praise please send it to Until next time, I’m Ed DiFolco, your Laidback Gourmet, wondering how these would taste with my steak sauce.
