Laidback Gourmet: Herr’s Flavored Cheese Curls Trio

Welcome back to this week’s edition of the Laidback Gourmet. This week I’m not reviewing just one thing. I’m not just reviewing two things. Nope, this week I’ll pulling the hat trick and I’m going to look at THREE new flavors of Herrs Flavored Cheese Curls. It’s a lot of stuff to look at in one review but I’ll do because I love each and every one of you…

…that and I really like cheese curls.

Apparently not satisfied with just the regular “cheese” flavor of ‘Flavored cheese curls” Herrs went out and made three new varieties and released them all at once. Those new flavors are Nacho Cheese, Deep Dish Pizza, and Bacon and Cheddar. I have to admit all three flavors sound a lot taster than Lay’s trio of chips. The only thing I’m not really a fan of is the name, “Flavored Cheese Curls”. It sounds so generic. Like going to Krusty Burger and ordering a Krusty partially gelatinated non-dairy gum-based beverage. Ah well, what’s in a name after all? I think it would be best to take a look at all three curls together, and the taste them each one at a time. If you disagree, too bad, its my blog.

Wow, just look at how different all three curls appear to be! There’s orange. Then there’s orange with some specks. And then there’s orange with more specks. That’s variety for you. I’m going to level with you, I had taken 3 extra photos for this review where I held up each curl up close so you could get a good look at them, but when I uploaded the pictures they all looked identical so I figured what was the point? I wonder if this is going to be a case where they all sort of taste alike but we’re suppose to pretend there really different? Only one way to find out I suppose, let’s start with the classic flavor of salty snacks: Nacho Cheese

Nacho Nacho Man; I want to be a Nacho Man

I like the font they used when spelling out “Nacho Cheese”. I dunno what it is about it but it kind of reminds me of a western. I guess this western is using vaqueros instead of cowboys. They don’t smell like much though there is a hint of nacho spice in there. Let’s give this one a shot.

Wow! I’m legitimately shocked. These are actually really good! They have a much stronger nacho cheese flavor than I thought they would. It’s not really flavored like a “Dorito nacho”, but really more like cheddar cheese mixed with spices and peppers. You know: Real nachos! The cheese taste is really strong, the spices aren’t over powering, and there’s the slightest bit of heat at the end. I’m honestly surprised at how good these are, and I’m fairly sure I’m going to end up finishing this bag before the day is out. (Don’t worry, its the smaller 99 cent bag so its not really THAT much junk food)

Moving on, I guess we should go from Mexico to Italy, Spaghetti western to just plain Spaghetti, so to speak:

Anyone else notice the pizza on the bag is nothing more than 3 inches of cheese topped with sauce?

Looking at this bag I just noticed the dot over the I in “Pizza” is a heart with the Italian flag colors. Somehow I think if you eat too much of these curls that heart would be beating a lot faster. These curls don’t smell too strongly either however I’m wondering if these are going to end up being as good as the last ones.

Surprisingly, they actually are as good! While I joked earlier that maybe they would all taste the same I can say that I was completely wrong. Even though they look identical these curls have a completely different taste. And yes, they really DO taste like pizza. Tomato, garlic, oregano, cheese… all the typical pizza flavors are strongly represented. They sort of remind me of those TMNT Crunchabungas from back in the day, does anyone remember those? Except these are better because the TMNT puffs were kind of gross and we only ate them because they had the turtles’ faces on the bag. And this awesome advertisement:

Seriously I would buy anything from singing claymation mutant turtles

That’s two really good flavors down, one left to go, let’s go from Italy to America, the land where we can put bacon on ANYTHING, so we can try the Bacon and Cheddar curls:

Why use the color yellow to represent bacon?

Again, take a look at that font. They spelt the word bacon using bacon font. I wish everything was spelt in bacon font. Same deal as before, very little in the way of scent, but my hopes are high going into this. Will this last one be as good as the last two?

Eh… I think I found the chink in the Herr’s armor. Don’t get me wrong, these are still good but they are a step down from the other two. The flavor is much not nearly as strong in these. They are also more salty than the other two. I suspect that’s because the way chips usually convey bacon flavor is with smokiness and saltiness. The problem is that these curls are plenty salty as it is, so the addition of more salt make them a bit too salty.

So to sum up, these three flavors all pretty good, with 2 being better than the last one. I’d pick them up if you see them, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. The flavors might not be that wacky but they are still delicious all the same. Final Score:
